LED PWM Drivers
October 31, 2005
A few devices for driving LEDs with constant current and PWM. These chips typically have serial interfaces for communicating with microcontrollers or computers. There are quite a few drivers designed to drive white LEDs for mobile phone camera flashes - I haven’t listed those, as I’m mostly interested in multichannel drivers suitable for RGB use.
Texas Instruments TLC5940
16 Channel LED Driver w/DOT Correction & Grayscale PWM Control
Maxim MAX6966
10-Port Constant-Current LED Drivers and I/O Expanders with PWM Intensity Control
Philips PCA9532
16-bit I²C LED dimmer

I’ve been looking for driver chips like this in a DIP package for a while.

The TI TLC5940 “NT” is a DIP package chip. I got one and it seems to work pretty well.

I really like the Maxim 6966 — easy to use and the constant current control is nice. Wish they had it in a DIP package and it was easier to find (I’ve only been able to get it from Maxim directly and it takes forever).
